KEYBOARDING
(June 8 – July 29) – 7:45 am – 10:20 am

Efficient use of the computer is a necessity in today’s high-tech, competitive world. Keyboarding is a skill course that combines touch-typing and basic word processing. Beginners learn and develop their touch typing skill while those students with some previous experience increase their skills to a higher level. Students will use a combination of tutorial software and Microsoft Word on computers in a Windows environment. Word Processing skills are used to create letters, tables, and other documents important for school, career or personal use. LHS/VHHS and college report formatting procedures are also covered. Internet activities are an integral part of the course.

Computer Skills is a required freshman program (not required if you are enrolled in a keyboarding class) to complete during your lunch/study hall  period.

STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED 8 ACADEMIC SEMESTER CLASSES FROM JUNE, 2009 TO JUNE, 2010 IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE DRIVER EDUCATION IN SUMMER SCHOOL.

IN ORDER TO SECURE AN ILLINOIS DRIVING PERMIT, A STUDENT MUST BE ENROLLED AND PRESENT IN DRIVER EDUCATION. ANY STUDENT THAT TAKES A PERMIT APPLICATION FOR SUMMER SCHOOL MUST USE THAT APPLICATION TO GET A PERMIT OR RETURN THE APPLICATION TO THE DRIVER EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. IF THE STUDENT DROPS FROM DRIVER EDUCATION, THE PERMIT WILL BE CANCELLED THROUGH THE SECRETARY OF STATE.

IN ORDER TO ENROLL IN THE PROGRAM, STUDENTS MUST BE AT THE SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR OR SENIOR LEVEL AND HAVE BEEN BORN BEFORE 6-1-95. THE STUDENT MUST OBTAIN THEIR DRIVER’S PERMIT BY 6-3-10.

DISTRICT 128 STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND LIBERTYVILLE OR VERNON HILLS HIGH SCHOOLS AND ARE INTERESTED IN TAKING DRIVER EDUCATION MUST PRE-REGISTER. PRE- REGISTRATION TAKES PLACE BETWEEN FEBRUARY 9 AND MARCH 13.STUDENTS WHO ATTEND DISTRICT 128 SCHOOLS MUST REGISTER WITH THEIR COUNSELOR BY MARCH 13.

DRIVER EDUCATION (Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel)

Driver Education Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel will be offered June 7 through July 22. They will not meet on Monday, July 5.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL DRIVER’S EDUCATION STUDENTS WILL MEET MONDAY, JUNE 7 AND TUESDAY, JUNE 8 FROM 12:00-2:30PM. THE FOLLOWING SCHEDULE WILL BE FOLLOWED STARTING WEDNESDAY JUNE 8.

DRIVER EDUCATION CLASSROOM is required of every District 128 student for graduation. Students will receive 30 hours of instruction in this one semester course. Areas of study include defensive driving techniques, buying-maintaining-insuring your car, the effect of alcohol and drugs on driving, the Illinois “Rules of the Road” booklet, and other topics.

DRIVER EDUCATION BEHIND-THE -WHEEL, in addition to the classroom course, is needed to qualify for the Driver Education certificate which makes students eligible to take the State Driver’s License exam after reaching age 16. The behind-the-wheel program consists of six hours of in-car, on the road driving. Schedules for Driver Education (Roadwork) must be flexible. Times will be determined by the Driver Education staff.

It continues an integrated, inquiry-based approach to reading, writing, speaking, and research, with critical thinking underpinning all of these strands. Students continue analytical and persuasive writing experiences in a variety of modes. They also practice literary interpretation through a variety of critical lenses.

It encourages students to explore prominent themes of American culture through the analysis of texts of all genres and historic periods. This course embodies an integrated, inquiry-based approach to reading, writing, speaking, and research, with critical thinking underpinning all of these strands.

FILM STUDIES

Film Studies focuses upon the analysis and appreciation of films. Students learn motion picture production, storytelling techniques, filmmakers’ responsibilities, the history of film, and the importance of film in our society. Students study classic films and important filmmakers.

INTRODUCTION TO HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH
(June 8 – July 1) – 7:45 am – 12:45 pm

Introduction to High School English provides incoming freshmen with direct instruction and practice in three areas of literacy: (1) grammar, usage, and mechanics, (2) reading strategies, and (3) basic compositional techniques. This course provides a “head start” in literacy skills that benefits incoming students in all subject areas.

CONSUMER MANAGEMENT
(June 8 – July 1) – 7:45am – 12:45 pm; (July 6 – July 29) – 7:45 am – 12:45 pm

Consumer Management students learn principles of the economy, banking, budgeting, credit, insurance, car buying, investing, and money management. Computer and Internet activities are used to support learning throughout the course. Food preparation and healthy living principles are also incorporated. Students will be able to manage personal resources valuable for success in financial decision making. Each student will have the experience of investing in the stock market and following the stocks for a period of time through a simulated project. Using the Internet as a source of information is stressed and explored through various projects. Passing this course meets the Consumer Education requirement for graduation.

The D128 Incoming Freshman Academy is a program designed to prepare students for academic success in high school by providing them with supplemental instruction designed to strengthen their skills in Reading, English, and Mathematics. Students who are identified for participation in the academy are expected to attend the six-week summer program. District 128 uses EXPLORE scores to identify incoming freshmen who would have difficulty meeting the standards of the high school curriculum because they perform below grade level. Based on the test information and a conversation with the middle school staff, we will enroll students in the D128 Incoming Freshman Academy Program.

ENGLISH

The Reading / English component of the Incoming Freshman Academy helps students to develop improved skills and confidence in five targeted areas: (1) reading comprehension across content areas, (2) reading for enjoyment, (3) vocabulary development, (4) grammar, usage, and mechanics, and (5) basic methods of composition. This course will provide students with solid preparation in each of the five targeted areas, leading to greater student success in English and in all high school courses that require reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.

MATHEMATICS

The mathematics component of the Incoming Freshman Academy helps students develop their skills in five targeted areas: (1) whole numbers, (2) integers, (3) fractions/ decimals/ percentages, (4) expressions, and (5) equations. This course will help students develop basic mathematical skills and enhance their ability to solve practical application problems.

FRENCH EXCHANGE PROGRAM

French students who have been placed and pre-registered in September will participate in the French Exchange Program. Student responsibilities include hosting a French student for two weeks, living with the French student and his/her family for two weeks, traveling and experiencing Paris and its cultural attractions, and submitting written work as required by the teacher to fulfill the requirements of this course. Summer School registration costs are included as part of the cost of the program. The District 128 Code of Conduct as outlined in the Student Handbook is in effect for the duration of his program both on campus and abroad. The grade for the French Exchange will be included in the student’s GPA unless the student submits the AGO form prior to the June departure.

LANGUAGE CULTURE STUDY ABROAD

Language/Culture Study Abroad is an opportunity for a student who participates in a recognized study abroad program to be awarded credit. The study of a foreign language and increased proficiency in that language must be demonstrated upon return in the form of transcripts, a written evaluation by the program instructor, and/or an interview with the International Languages Supervisor. 0.5 credit will be awarded following participation in a program that afforded the student three weeks or more of experience and language study abroad once department expectations have been met. A maximum of one Language/Culture Study Abroad credit may be received throughout a student’s four years in high school. Grades received will not be included in the student’s GPA. Interested students should contact the Supervisor of International Languages for program approval prior to enrollment.

SPANISH BRIDGE PROGRAM

The summer school Spanish Bridge Program is for incoming freshmen students or any student needing a review of Spanish I skills. This course will review the skills necessary to be successful in high school Spanish 2. Emphasis will be placed on language for communication. Students will develop their understanding of grammatical concepts as well. Registration for this course ends June 5.

ALGEBRA I SEMESTER 1

ALGEBRA I SEMESTER 2

Algebra 1 is a remedial course for students needing a credit in Math. Topics covered in this course include properties of real numbers, linear equations and inequalities and their graphs, operations with polynomials and radicals, properties of exponents, factoring, general problem solving, critical thinking, and elementary probability and statistics concepts.

COMPUTER SCIENCE HONORS

Computer Science Honors (Visual Basic) is intended for students interested in computer programming. The student will use Visual Basic to develop programs by writing structured code and designing the graphical user interface. Topics include programming methodology, iteration, selection, function design, arrays, and graphics. The student will receive a firm foundation of computer programming needed to take the Advanced Placement Computer Science course.

In summer school Geometry, students will learn to recognize and understand the various geometric shapes and solids and know their properties. They will develop deductive reasoning ability and use it on proofs of geometric ideas. First semester topics include measurement, points, lines, planes, angles, triangles, parallel lines and proof. Second semester topics include polygons, similarity, right triangles, circles, area, surface area and volume.

TRIGONOMETRY

Trigonometry covers applied trigonometry, including right triangle trigonometry, law of sines and cosines, graphing of trigonometric functions, and sinusoidal modeling. The course also covers identities, complex numbers, solutions of equations, inverses, complex numbers, introduction to polar topics, and topics required for the study of Calculus. Many universities require a background in this area. This course requires the use of a graphing calculator.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

The essential component of Environmental Science is the field experience that will generate data to be used as students apply the scientific methods. Students will take field trips to various environmental sites to collect, analyze, and interpret data. Students will use this data to propose conclusions and solutions to a variety of real life problems. Each site will offer many earth and life science discoveries. Alternate days will be spent in the classroom on work that is directly related to the field experience and aligned with state standards. Topics will include invasive species, wetland preservation, water and soil studies, erosion, glaciations, alternative energy analysis, genetics, and global environmental concerns.

GOVERNMENT

Government includes the fundamentals of the United States Constitution, state and local government, the evolutionary development of the political process, and the rights and responsibilities of United States citizenship. Research work is required.

RESEARCH AND WRITING SKILLS FOR SOCIAL STUDIES

The purpose of Research and Writing Skills for Social Studies is to better prepare students for research work and exam writing in social studies classes in District 128. Students will be introduced to the methods of proper library and Internet resource research and the use of primary resources in historical writing. They will learn documentation styles used in academic writing, peer editing techniques, and revision/rewriting skills. Book review and annotated bibliography preparation, essay and exam writing structure, and “Advanced Placement” style essay question writing will also be reviewed. Students will be given the opportunity to use these skills and techniques by completing a research assignment.

UNITED STATES HISTORY SEMESTER 2

United States History is a broad survey of the major social, economic, political, and cultural events, concepts, and themes that have been the forces in the development of the United States. First semester covers materials beginning with the Revolutionary Era and ending with Industrialization. Second semester covers materials beginning with the Progressive Era and extending to the present. Research work and writing are required each semester.
