In the past few months, District 128
administrators have discussed the pros and cons of developing a
District 128 presence on Facebook and Twitter. Several administrators
have attended numerous seminars and webinars regarding the issues
surrounding social networking sites and schools. After much
discussion, we have determined that Facebook is a communication tool
that today is most popular with students and families.
We believe that having a Facebook fan page will
enable us to reach a broader audience of District 128 constituents.
Unless you are a current D128 student, parent or employee, odds are
pretty good that you don't regularly visit our websites. A Facebook
page will allow us to reach those named above, as well as the many more
people who will connect with us on Facebook. In other words, we will
be reaching people where they are, rather than expecting them to reach
us. Moreover, through the launch of our own fan page, we hope to model
the appropriate use of Facebook as described below in the District’s
"expectations for communicating electronically with students."
The District 128 Facebook fan page launched on
March 25. A link to the page can be found at the bottom of each of the
school and District homepages. You will NOT have to have a Facebook
account to view the page.
The D128 Facebook page will contain news and
informational postings about D128, LHS and VHHS, and will be maintained
by the District 128 Communications Department. In many cases, it will
duplicate the information already posted to the District website and
distributed to the local media. Again, it is one more means of
reaching our wide variety of publics. It is in no way intended to
replace the ALERTNOW system used to communicate emergency information
to parents. The Facebook site will continue to be blocked to students
on our school networks.
